Book Review: Grey by E. L. James - Reviewed by CloggieA (05 Oct 2016)
Grey is the fourth book in the Fifty Shades Trilogy by E.L. James. It covers the same territory as the first book in the trilogy, but from the perspective of Christian Grey. So the reader gets the first encounter between Anastasia Steele and Christian, and the development of their relationship, all from his point of view. This is interspersed with bits of business the millionaire does, giving the reader a window into his character, and hints about his early life. Grey seems to be both attracted to and annoyed/angered by Anastasia Steele’s sassiness and independence, a theme James labours to the point of irritation. Other reviewers have mentioned how Grey seems to give his penis a separate identity; and his alter-ego constantly admonishes him in italics. Again, there’s a lot of biting of the bottom lip. The email banter is sometimes quite witty and fun, and it does manage to take up a goodly portion of the 500+ pages. Even readers who pick this one up as cheaply as $1.50 (and the current going rate must say something about the quality?) are unlikely to want to spend another 500+ pages of reading time on further additions to this trilogy: this really is a too-generous serve of Christian Grey. For diehard fans only. 2 stars
After twenty-five years working in TV, E L James decided to pursue her childhood dream, and set out to write stories that readers would fall in love with. The result was the sensuous romance Fifty Shades of Grey and its two sequels, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, a trilogy that went on to sell more than 125 million copies worldwide in 52 languages. In 2012 E L James was named one of Barbara Walters s Ten Most Fascinating People of the Year, one of Time magazine s Most Influential People in the World, and Publishers Weekly s Person of the Year. Fifty Shades of Grey stayed on the New York Times Best Seller List for 133 consecutive weeks, and in 2015 the film adaptation on which James worked as producer - broke box-office records all over the world for Universal Pictures. E L James lives in West London with her husband, the novelist and screenwriter Niall Leonard, and their two sons. She continues to write novels while acting as producer on the upcoming movie versions of Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed.
