Book Review: I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore - Reviewed by TJW (21 Jul 2011)
John is an Alien come to Earth from his home planet Lorien which was destroy by the invading Mogadorians. He was sent with 9 other children to Earth to be protected until they can reinhabit Lorien. Though life on Earth isn’t easy for John because his people are being hunted and killed, they are only able to be killed in their number order, the first 3 are dead and John is number four.
The book starts with John and his Garde (Guardian) Henri relocating in an effort to maintain their safety after John develops his first legacy (or power). They move to a small town in Ohio, though John doesn’t usually make friends, so it’s easy for him to go unnoticed and easier to pack up and leave at a moment notice, but he instantly hits it off with Sarah a pretty girl from his school and Sam, a boy obsessed with alien conspiracy theories.
But moving to a small town doesn't gaurentee that John will be able to hide from those that are hunting him...
I enjoyed the book, I enjoyed getting to know the characters and watch them develop relationships so I didn’t find the first part of the book boring. The second half picks up with the supernatural side and the action and gets exciting. I feel like I did have some trouble following the final fight scene at the school though, it was a bit confusing at time.
The story was interesting, and their world is intriguing to learn about because it's very different from anything I have read so far. The concept of only being able to kill them in numerical order is clever I think.
I guess I enjoyed the book, it isn’t one I would go raving about but it’s not one where I wouldn’t want to read it or read the next book to come out. The ending was SO sad, I had to fight back tears…

Those who have an affinity for sci-fi or fantasy would most likely find this book interesting. I was intrigued by the concept of human-like aliens living among humans, which was why I purchased this book in the first place.
I understand how John Smith (or Number Four) wants to fit in and reside permanently in one place when he arrives in Paradise, Ohio. He is tired of being a fugitive and wants to live a normal life. What's more is that Sarah Hart, the pretty blond girl in his new school makes his heart beats faster every time he sees her. And he has a new best friend, Sam Goode.
I am Number Four is an action-packed, suspenseful novel by an author whose real name is unknown to the public. The first half of the book was engrossing, but I did not enjoy the ending as it turned to be peculiar, or I might say, strange. There were huge, monster-sized dogs tearing up the school, and our lovely, adorable Bernie Kosar turned out to be something else as well.
Perhaps not everyone will enjoy this book, but if you ask me, I'd say, "Give it a try!"
Pittacus Lore is Lorien's ruling elder. He has been on Earth for the last twelve years preparing for the war that will decide Earth's fate. His whereabouts are unknown. The first book in his Lorien Legacies series, I Am Number Four, is now a major Disney motion picture and is perfect for fans of The Hunger Games.
