Description - India Dark by Kirsty Murray

Daisy opened her mouth and lies flew out. Her face so pink and white, her lips so plump and sweet, her lies so vile. I had to cover my ears.

I shut my eyes, wanting to block out the courtroom, to neither see nor hear the evil: but Tilly grabbed my arm and twisted the skin on my wrist in a Chinese burn.

'Poesy Swift,' she whispered, her breath hot against my neck, 'open your eyes, and take that look off your face. We will never get home if you ruin everything.'

Madras 1910: a troupe of child performers are stranded, having staged a strike against their manager. Their fate now depends on the outcome of a court case, and an alliance with gentlemen of the British Raj.

Based on a true story, India Dark recreates shifting friendships and loyalties and the clash of innocence versus experience against the backdrop of India's seductive mysteries.

Book Review: India Dark by Kirsty Murray - Reviewed by (15 Jul 2011)

India Dark is a thus far untold story of a group of stage working children, known as the liliputians. There are two tellers of this story, sort of friends Tilly Sweetrick as she calls herself and Posey Swift. Tilly wants to be the star of any production she can be, and though she is only a young teenager in 1910, she is fearce and fearless when it comes to getting what she wants; Tilly will be harsh, unforvigable and unforgettable in this story of a performing troupe, and she will do anything to be famous.

Posey is sweet, caring and knows right from wrong, and a lot of things are wrong in her new life, but not until it comes to the end when the children have lied and schemed to a far line, will we see if Posey Swift will do the right thing every time.

This is a shockingly amazing, beautiful and scandulous book, a book to make you feel lost and scared and full of life, a book with tricks and music, a book of a group of children who are very wronged and do wrong too. It is like nothing you'll ahve read before and you won't regret reading it.
