Description - Industry and Environment in Latin America by Rhys Jenkins
Most discussion of environmental issues in Latin America has focussed on the 'green issues' of deforestation and land degradation. Although the majority of Latin Americans live in urban areas and the region has industrialized and urbanized rapidly, relatively little attention has been paid to the 'brown issues' such as industrial pollution. Industry and Environment in Latin America redresses this imbalance. Focussing on the three most industrialized countries in the region (Argentina, Brazil and Mexico), the book situates the environmental impact of industry in the context of the recent liberalization of the Latin American economies. In addition to providing regional overviews of the environmental impact of the manufacturing sector and mining, the book includes detailed case-studies of some of the most polluting industries, and evaluates the development of environmental management and pollution prevention. The conclusion emerging from these studies is that Latin American industry is still a long way from sustainability.
