Description - The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy
With an Introduction and Notes by Michael Irwin, Professor of English Literature, University of Kent at Canterbury.
None of the great Victorian novels is more vivid and readable than The Mayor of Casterbridge. Set in the heart of Hardy's Wessex, the 'partly real, partly dream country' he founded on his native Dorset, it charts the rise and self-induced downfall of a single 'man of character'.
The fast-moving and ingeniously contrived narrative is Shakespearian in its tragic force, and features some of the author's most striking episodes and brilliant passages of description.

Book Review: Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy - Reviewed by blackbird (25 May 2011)
I purchased this book at the airport to read on the plane on the way to my 2 day getaway.. I simply could not put it down and chose to continue reading on the beach, on the transfer coach etc... This book drew me in and took me back in time to the late 1800's. Happy, sad, exciting, breath holding and real all in the book. If you are a fan of stories from days gone by, then try this book. The names, descriptive attention to detail/s and the language used take you to another time so much that you feel like you are there, alongside the very endearing characters of this wonderful saga like story.
