Description - Meister Eckhart by C.F. Kelley

C. F. Kelley's "Meister Eckhart on Divine Knowledge", first published in 1997, remains one of the finest studies ever made of this seminal and profoundly influential thinker. Why? No other student of Eckhart has so capably identified, fully grasped, and clearly explained the fundamental insight that makes him one of the greatest of all Christian mystics. This is surely due to the fact that Kelley was a professionally trained philosopher and former Benedictine monk who spent some 30 years studying and contemplating Eckhart's wisdom. He understood the fundamental principle that elevates the great Dominican theologian above all other Western mystics - the singular principle that one must 'think principally', in divinis - which is to say, from within the mind or orientation of the Godhead or 'Divine Knowledge' Itself. In so doing, Kelley demonstrated that Eckhart's wisdom transcended what have long been considered the highest forms of ecstatic mystical transport and absorption.Although the book is concentrated and at times demanding, it is imbued with Kelley's quiet passion and enthusiasm and never feels merely academic. Just as Eckhart himself was both a teacher and a preacher, Kelley's exposition leads us by hand into and through Eckhart's most difficult philosophical and theological principles in a manner that appeals to our intellect, our intuition, and our feeling.
