Description - A New Kind of Dreaming by Anthony Eaton

'You want to hear a story?' 'Eh?' 'This town, it's full of stories. Some Aboriginal, some white, some Malay and Indonesian. All sorts of different ideas. I reckon you might need to hear on of them.' When the court sent Jamie Riley to Port Barren, he hadn't expected much - thought he'd just serve his time and get out. He hadn't counted on being drawn into the town's murky past, into a web of secrets, lies and murder which might well cost him much more than just his freedom. This is the story of a boy's journey to reveal a buried secret, and of a town too scared of its past to face its future. It's a story for anyone who dreams . . .

Book Review: New Kind of Dreaming by Anthony Eaton - Reviewed by (28 Mar 2014)

The book A New Kind of Dreaming Is about a troubled young boy named Jamie who is sent to the town of Port Barren. The only family in which Jamie has is his brother Eddie, who is locked up in jail for armed robbery. His mother died when he was young and his father is a heavy alcoholic. When Jamie arrives in Port Barren he notices that it has a strange eerie feeling to it. He then goes around asking questions about a mysterious boat which is along the beach. He also meets people such as his guidance counselor Lorraine, a friendly boy named Cameron whom he becomes good friends with. He also meets Archie his foster parent and Sergeant Butcher the police officer who has a lot of dark secrets later on revealed. My personal opinion of the book was that it caught my attention, keeping me engaged by ending each chapter on a cliff hanger. From the very start of the book where the prelude explained what happened on the boat to the end where the truth is revealed. I found it to be an enjoyable well written tale. Rating: 4/5

So, for school we had to read this book, A New Kind of Dreaming. As most of the school books aren’t that great, I put it off for a while expecting the book to be like others. But then as you would expect, the time came and I had to read it. It only took me a few pages to be hooked into the eerie town, Port Barren. Once I started reading, there was no stopping and I finished it in two days and wished there was more. The compelling story is about Jamie Riley, who gets shipped off to Port Barren for stealing cars and doing other things. As soon as he arrives immediately there is the feeling that something is not right, that Port Barren doesn’t want to share its past. Through many tough times and through accusations of crimes he didn’t do, Jamie too finds himself caught up with the towns past. Butcher, the local cop, has something to hide, and so does Lorraine, the area’s Social worker. I undeniably recommend this book to any reader above the age of 12 and I promise for you to be hooked as well!

Far away from prying eyes lies the eerie town of Port Barren, full of secrets and people who are willing to do anything to keep them It all begins when Jamie, a teenager with a long criminal record, gets sent to Port Barren after narrowly avoiding jail. Thinking that he’d just serve his time and get out, he has no idea about the life changing events that are about to take place. The sergeant of the town, Butcher seems to have a special hatred for Jamie and does whatever he can to ensure that nobody trusts Jamie by spreading rumours about him and framing him for crimes that he does not commit. It is when Jamie tries to uncover his past that he takes things onto a whole other level. This novel is gripping right from the start and I could not put it down until I had finished it. All throughout the book the author maintains a sense of mystery and we are left to guess what is about to happen. “A New Kind Of Dreaming” is an excellent book that is excellent for all teenage readers.
