Book Review: Nine Parts Of Desire by Geraldine Brooks - Reviewed by rachthevego (10 Jun 2011)
This is Geraldine Brooks' true account of her time in the middle east. Much of her time there was spent living with women and hidden behind the veil.
Her initial aim was to tell the story of feminist Muslim women. It seems there were not that many and those that were didn't want to talk / be identified because they feared for their safety.
What eventuates is more an account of the oppression of women in Islamic states. Nonetheless it makes for an extremely interesting read as the stories of several women unfold. Some embrace their place in society, others don't, but very few really attempt to rebel. It is difficult to do so and often very dangerous.
Geraldine Brooks is the Australian-born author of the bestselling novels Year of Wonders and March, for which she won the Pulitzer Prize in 2006. Her eagerly-awaited third novel, People of the Book, will be published in 2008. She is also the author of the acclaimed non-fiction works Nine Parts of Desire and Foreign Correspondence, both published in Australia by Bantam. A graduate of Sydney University and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Brooks was a correspondent for The Wall Street Journal in Bosnia, Somalia and the Middle East. She lives in rural Virginia with her husband, the author Tony Horwitz, and their son.
