Description - One Small Island by Alison Lester

Macquarie Island lies in the Southern Ocean, between Antarctica and New Zealand. A speck of green in the vast, windswept sea, it is a haven for many creatures that live above and below the waves. In One Small Island, Alison Lester and Coral Tulloch bring us the story of this remote and precious World Heritage Site. Together they explore the island's unique geological beginnings, discovery and degradation at the hands of humans, and the battle to restore it today.

This is a beautiful, award-winning picture book by much-loved creators Alison Lester and Coral Tulloch about the remote and precious World Heritage site, Macquarie Island, and the battle to save it from environmental destruction. One Small Island asks the important question- can Macquarie Island and places like it be saved?

Book Review: One Small Island by Alison Lester - Reviewed by (28 Nov 2011)

This detailed picture book is the story of Maquarie island, how it was before people came, what happened after they found it, killed most of the natural animals and bought domesticated ones onto the previously free island. How they almost destroyed it. And then, later, how a new generation came and started working on saving this island, making it safe for the endangered animals who had always lived on it, getting all the domesticated animals away and renewing Maquarie's life. Making it a safe haven again.

It is told in beautiful words, but also in detailed pictures, which you can read both together or alone, to make slightly different stories. It is one of the best books I know of and perfect for people interested in saving the envoriment.
