Description - Psychiatric Comorbidity in Epilepsy by Harry Waldon McConnell

Although epilepsy affects almost two per cent of the world's population, the majority of people with epilepsy lead normal lives. As with all disorders of brain function, however, epilepsy carries an increased risk of psychological disorder. For some patients, recurrent seizures may lead to a disruption of intellect, personality or emotions. At the same time, the study of epilepsy and its psychiatric comorbidity provides an opportunity to expand our understanding of cognitive and emotional behaviour by relating the anatomical focus of the seizure to behaviour associated with the seizure. Written by authorities in the field of neuropsychiatric manifestations of epilepsy, this is a comprehensive clinical, research and treatment text for healthcare professionals. It is intended for those who treat patients with epilepsy and comorbid psychiatric conditions, particulary psychiatrists, neurologists and neuropsychologists. Based on a knowledge of contemporary neuroscience, this book addresses the critical psychosocial and psychiatric issues in epileptology that affect patient care, including: depression; psychosis; nonepileptic events; anticonvulsant toxicity; and family issues.
