NOW A MAJOR NETFLIX MOVIE STARRING LILY JAMES, ARMIE HAMMER AND KRISTEN SCOTT THOMAS

Working as a lady's companion, the orphaned heroine of Rebecca learns her place. Life begins to look very bleak until, on a trip to the South of France, she meets Maxim de Winter, a handsome widower whose sudden proposal of marriage takes her by surprise. Whisked from glamorous Monte Carlo to his brooding estate, Manderley, on the Cornish Coast, the new Mrs de Winter finds Max a changed man. And the memory of his dead wife Rebecca is forever kept alive by the forbidding Mrs Danvers . . .

Not since Jane Eyre has a heroine faced such difficulty with the Other Woman. An international bestseller that has never gone out of print, Rebecca is the haunting story of a young girl consumed by love and the struggle to find her identity.

Book Review: Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier - Reviewed by (08 Jun 2011)

du Maurier's prose is exquisite. The narrator's journey is at times "edge of the seat" stuff with a strong sense of doom hanging over the book right to the last page. The story has lots of twist. It wasn't until about two-thirds through that I realised that the protagonist, the narrator, had no name. This is a deliberate ploy to make the main character, Rebecca, overwhelm the story. It seemed I could see, feel and walk in Manderley, the stately home where most of the book is set. The writing is that powerful. This is definitely a book I recommend to others.
