Book Review: Scoop McLaren: Detective Editor by Helen Castles - Reviewed by Rachel (25 Oct 2019)
Scoop McLaren runs an online newspaper where she and her best friend Evie not only report the news in their harbour village but they are also the town's go-to girls to solve mysteries. There biggest mystery to date is finding out the identity of Sonny Fink who writes his own online newspaper. The news in Sonny's paper is uploaded at midnight every night and whatever is written always happens. It predicts such terrible events that Scoop fears Sonny will eventually ruin the town and it's up to Scoop and Evie to uncover Sonny's identity and save the town. I loved this book. It's very clever, smart and funny and had a really lovely feel to it that I think middle-grade readers, girls especially, will love. The author makes good use of modern ways of the crime fighters communicating with messenger and has actual newspaper articles along the way that help move the plot along. For me it had a real delightful feel to it. The descriptions of their lovely town and an a smashing list of quirky, unique characters all work together brilliantly. It's one of those books that you want to go on and on, so in that respect, I think it could be a bit longer, but children will find it an easy, satisfying read I suspect. This book is the reason why I love middle-grade books and particularly middle-grade mysteries. I also loved Scoop's writing tips at the back. I will definitely be looking for the next book in this series.
