Description - The The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya by Nagaru Tanigawa

Kyon is your ordinary high school freshman who has long given up on his childhood dreams of encountering the fantastic and supernatural...or so he thought. From the very first day of school, his classmate--the beautiful but eccentric Haruhi Suzumiya--makes it very clear that her only desire is to meet aliens, time travelers, and psychics! A chance conversation between the two inspires Haruhi to form the SOS Brigade, a school club created for the sole purpose of gathering together such supernatural beings. The initial members consist of the mute bookworm Yuki Nagato, the timid but voluptuous Miharu Asahina, and the polite and ever-smiling Itsuki Koizumi. By the end of this first volume, Kyon quickly finds out that these seemingly 'helpless victims' of Haruhi's are actually members of secret organizations--both futuristic and alien--with the single aim of keeping watch over Haruhi Suzumiya as she is the pinnacle of some major calamity on the horizon...

Book Review: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya by Nagaru Tanigawa - Reviewed by (17 Jul 2011)

Adapting a manga from a by far famous novel is no easy task, while the mangaka for the most part translates the story well, there appears to be something missing..

Storywise, it's extremely faithful to the novels, however, many important plot-points from the novel appears to be lost. And for readers such as myself, the only thing aiding in understanding the sometimes jumped narrative is prior knowledge gained from the anime series or the novels themselves. Sometimes sudden jumps occur throughout the novel, as if the mangaka Tsugano simply wanted to 'tick' off the best parts of the series.

Artwork is a hit or miss, containing much less detail when compared to the illustrations shown in the Light Novels. Panels are sometimes cluttered, and memorable characters can sometimes be portrayed 'off-model'.

Overall, for anyone not interested in reading the light novels, this provides a decent, sometimes confusing alternative. I would still recommend the anime series or the novels themselves if you prefer a much easier way to understand the series.
