Author Biography - Leslie Hawkins
Leslie Hawkins trained as a Clinical Physiologist at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, where he worked until he moved to the University of Surrey in 1970 a Lecturer and then Senior Lecturer in Human Biology. His research interests at Barts concerned the pathophysiology of chronic carbon monoxide exposure, which developed into a more general interest in Environmental Physiology after he joined the University of Surrey. In 1984 he was appointed to the Robens Institute to establish and Head an Occupational Health Unit; this has now become the Robens Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. Leslie now holds a professorial grade post as University Director and Director of the Robens Centre. The Robens Centre undertakes consultancy and provides occupational health and safety services and runs postgraduate Diploma and Masters level courses in Occupational Health, Occupational Health Nursing, Hygiene and Safety. He is the University Vice-Chancellor's special advisor on occupational and environmental health. His research interests are mainly concerned with the health effects of working environments. He is a consultant to a number of companies and Government bodied on environmental and occupational health issues and on the management of health and safety at work. His is Law Society listed as an expert witness in the fields of health and safety and is involved in both civil litigation and public inquiry cases.
