Book Review: Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge 25th Edition by Mem Fox - Reviewed by RebeccaC (03 Sep 2011)
Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge is a wonderful story about a young boy finding joy, and connecting with, the older generation. He lives next door to a nursing home, and knows many id the residents there. The books describes the relationship he has with each person, and each relationship is illustrated in Julie Vivas’ wonderful casual style that always seems to complement Mem Fox’s stories so well. Each resident has something particular about them that makes them different. One likes cricket, for instance, and he is shown wielding a broom as a cricket bat. ‘He played with Mr Tippett who was crazy about cricket.’ Another likes to tell him crazy stores, and is depicted i the books with arms raised in a scary posture, such that is used for telling scary stories. ‘He listened to Mr Hosking who told him scary stories.’
But, the boy’s favourite person is Miss Nancy Alison Delacourt Cooper, because ‘she had four names just as he did.’ One day, Wilifrid hears his parents talking about his friend having lost her memory, so that starts a quest to first of all discover what a memory is, and then to find it for Miss Nancy.
As he asks each of the nursing home residents what a memory is, the illustrations are matched to he activity they are doing at the time. When he asks Mrs Jordan what a memory is, she replies ‘’Something warm, my child, something warm.’ As she is sipping from a cup of something warm. Once he has an answer from each of his friends, he then sets out to find an item that matches each definition of a memory. He then presents his findings to Miss Nancy as her missing memory.
In each of the colourful illustrations, Wilifrid is shown getting along well with each of the old people. They are obviously enjoying his company, as is shown by their smiling faces as he goes on with his boyish activities.
This is a beautiful story that will entertain young audiences as well as the older ones who will read it to them. It was wonderful to read as story that showed the very young taking an active and welcome role in the lives of the very old.
